  • I’m not a law talking guy, but from my understanding of it, downloading isn’t illegal. But if you’re torrenting it, you’re uploading bits of it to others while you’re downloading. That would be distributing it to others, so that’s copyright infringement.

So if you could find a way to download something without uploading anything, you’d be fine. Kinda like if someone uploads copyright infringing material to youtube. You’re not going to get into hot water for watching that video, but the person who uploaded is.

  • New York is also notable for being where Fox News is based. The employees of that organization feeling some pain will make it more likely the story of the negative impacts of Trump’s tariff policies will be reported by the only “news” media that matters in the US right now. We know Fox News showed a car dealer saying the price of a Ford Truck was going up by $20K and the next day the auto industry was exempted by tariffs.

Also it’s likely dependent on how contract with the utilities in that area is structured. It may not be possible to be all that granular in where it effects. But we definitely need NYC affected so Fox News will be affected. Sorry to everyone else, but it’s a Trade War and like in any war, there will be collateral damage.

  • Are you referring to the use of coal when making steel? You know steel can be made without using coal. Also trains and buses are made using steel, so not sure what your point is.

We can’t bulldoze down entire communities and rebuild them so they’re optimal mass transit. We can’t even keep the carbon tax going in Canada because that’s unpopular. It’s a struggle to reduce carbon output in a democratic society, but we can’t do anything by being uncompromising assholes about it. I’d prefer everyone take transit everywhere too, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon, so EVs are a reasonable compromise. The goal is to reduce carbon not enforce our will onto others.

  • Are you missing the part where Russia has to produce so many tanks because Ukrainians keep blowing them up?

Ukraine has also had a lot of success with Storm Shadow missiles. I’ll let you google where those are made.

And of course Ukraine on it’s own is now producing about 50% of the number of shells Russia produces. And there’s a lot of drones that Ukraine is producing, which have proven to be very effective against the Russian military.

Russia will soon be broke from this war. It will take a decade for Russia to have the military strength to take on the EU and that can only begin when Russia ends it’s war with Ukraine. In that time the EU can build a strong force to counter Russia.

The free world doesn’t need the US, and it certainly doesn’t need Russia.

  • It’s completely relevant to your fallacious argument that other countries have social programs because the benevolent protection from the US.

The US could have the best healthcare systems in the world without reducing military spending. It only doesn’t for the sake of the profit of insurance companies.

Your social programs don’t suck because of your “benevoloent protection” (which has turned into a mafia protection racket now) but because American hyper-capitalist ideology is a barrier against being able to create effective social programs.

  • Yeah, and property taxes result in more low density housing, as that increases the amount of tax revenue per person. High density housing means less revenue per person but the costs of services per person is still about the same. Sure theoretically, public transit is cheaper per person with high density housing, but realistically it isn’t because nobody gives a shit about public transit in the suburbs.

Of course there’s more costs overall because more suburbs mean governments are pressured to spend insane amounts of money on building and expanding highways. But it’s usually a different level of government that builds the highways, so doesn’t factor in the decisions to create more low density housing.
